Tomić monastery

Manastir Svetog Apostola Tome, known locally as “Tomić,” is located in the village of Vojska in the municipality of Svilajnac, on the right bank of the Morava river, as the second in the series of Moravske Svete Gore monasteries going downstream.

There are no written records about the time of construction of the Monastery and its founder, but it is believed to have been built during the reign of St. Despot Stefan Visoki, before the end of Serbian despotism, when a new layer of rulers was formed who followed Despot Stefan in his legacy activities to the extent of their abilities.

Challenges

The key challenge was to build a seamless experience that balances rich multimedia content—particularly large photo galleries—with a smooth and secure e-commerce functionality. Integrating product sales without detracting from the monastery’s cultural presentation required a user-friendly and performant platform. Additionally, the site needed to maintain fast load times and an intuitive navigation structure to serve diverse visitor interests.

Technologies

Powered by WordPress CMS, the site uses Elementor page builder for flexible design and easy content updates. WooCommerce is integrated for managing product listings and transactions, enabling the monastery to sell items directly on the site. For photo galleries, PhotoSwipe provides a smooth, responsive experience to showcase images. The backend runs on PHP 7.3 with MySQL, served through Nginx web server ensuring reliable performance and scalability. Google Fonts and Twitter Emoji enhance the visual consistency and user engagement. JavaScript libraries like jQuery, Swiper, and PhotoSwipe enable interactive elements, including galleries and navigation.

The results

The website successfully merges cultural heritage with modern e-commerce, allowing visitors to experience the monastery’s spiritual and historical richness while purchasing related products online. High-quality galleries attract visitors interested in exploring the monastery visually, while the integrated WooCommerce store expands engagement and support for the monastery’s activities. The platform offers smooth navigation, responsive design, and quick loading times, meeting the needs of diverse users.
