The National Library of Serbia

The National Library of Serbia’s website had remained largely unchanged since the early 2000s, with two decades of continuous content accumulation but minimal maintenance or modernization. To address this, a completely new website was developed in WordPress using the Elementor page builder, providing a modern, user-friendly digital gateway to the library’s vast resources. The design was carefully crafted in Figma and approved by the client, ensuring alignment with the institution’s identity and usability goals. All content from the old site was meticulously migrated to the new platform, preserving the rich historical material while enhancing accessibility and navigation.

Challenges

The main challenge of the project was the complex migration of an extensive and historically significant content archive accumulated over 20 years. This required a seamless transfer process that avoided any disruption in user access or loss of valuable data. Additionally, the new platform needed to offer improved usability and performance, transforming an outdated and static site into a dynamic and responsive resource. Ensuring the new design respected the institution’s heritage while meeting modern web standards was another important consideration.

Technologies

From a technological standpoint, the new site leverages WordPress for its flexibility and wide plugin ecosystem, combined with Elementor’s visual drag-and-drop interface that facilitates intuitive design and content management. The migration process involved detailed content structuring to integrate decades of material into a coherent, searchable format. The Figma-designed layout provided a clear visual roadmap, allowing the development team to build a responsive and accessible website that works smoothly across all devices. This approach ensured a balance between preserving legacy content and offering a fresh, engaging user experience.

The results

The result is a fully modernized, easy-to-navigate website that maintains the National Library’s vast digital collection intact while greatly improving user engagement. The migration successfully brought all historical materials into the new platform without the need for archiving or parallel sites. With an optimized content management system and responsive design, the library is well-positioned for future growth and continued digital outreach.
